      Pettifog

This word was used accusatorily by both Jon Stewart and Bill O'Reilly in their recent debate over whether or not the rapper Common should have been invited to the White House's Poetry Jam (or whatever it was).

I think the two talking heads were using the secondary definition of the word, meaning "chicanery" or deceptive debate tactics.

I think the primary definition of "trifling" applies to the premise of the debate itself, or more specifically to the importance placed on the Common invitation itself. There are much bigger things going on.

      Sententious

      Easeier alternative: self-righteous.

Does it make me sententious that I prefer to use sententious instead of the easier alternative?

I think not...maybe snooty, but not sententious.

I saw this in the book Wicked, referring (I think) to Nessarose, Elphaba's sister who would, in fact, be aptly described as sententious.

      note: not ya'll.

      This should settle the debate.

      Temerity

      Hannah-storm-

Watching Sports Center this morning, Hannah Storm mentioned the temerity of an Oklahoma State wide receiver for making a great play. I thought, that doesn't sound right.

      It wasn't.

Another word with the same meaning: reckless.

I'm slightly off-put by the what-seems-to-me-to-be missing w in reckless.

The word she should have used was courage. She showed temerity for using temerity the way she did.

      uncompelling

I looked up this word because in writing a document, my spell check gave the red, squiggly line suggesting I had misspelled it. But I hadn't. So right clicked for suggestions, and it basically was accusing me of making up the word.

      Spell check was wrong.

Skynet has a long way to go before computers can take over the world. Then again, Terminators probably don't do a lot of spell-checking.

      saccadic

This was one of those words that not only did I not know what it was, i couldn't even pronounce it.

It sounds like "psychotic" but is not at all related.

it's an adjective, and refers to sporadic movements.

The word shows up in this article that a curveball is just an optical illusion, whereas my brief thought that I could probably hit a curveball is an mental delusion.

      Imgres

The illusion is illustrated here. It's a lot of fun if you pretend that the blue spot is the Old Spice guy: "look at me. Look at the spinning ball. Now look back at me.  I'm on a horse."

Better word: jerky (like an adjective, not like a noun, as in "dried beef.")
